MGE: How To Actually Get The Commander You Want

MGE: How To Actually Get The Commander You Want

Mightiest Governor runs on a ~2-week cycle, lasts 6 days, and is the biggest recurring source of a free legendary plus sculptures. Most guides tell you to "save speedups." Here is the math they don't do.

The structure, precisely

Six stages, one per UTC day, and — the fact that changes strategy — scoring is per-stage, not cumulative. Six separate counters, six separate leaderboards. You do not need to win MGE; you need to win the stages whose currency you have. You can also change your commander pick any time before the last stage ends, so pick late, with information.

WHEN: how to time your two weeks

The cycle rotates the featured pool by the commander's talent tree — not troop type. (This reading made a forward prediction that confirmed on schedule; the troop-type reading contradicts itself the moment a dual-tree commander appears in two pools.) So the actual play pattern is: check the current pool, and if your target's tree isn't featured, hoard this cycle and dump next cycle. Two weeks of stockpile in the right cycle beats four weeks split across the wrong ones.

Stage 1 (training): the per-unit rule is TRUE and gives the WRONG answer

The advice everywhere: "train raw T5, it's 100 points a unit versus 60 for an upgrade — 1.67× better." Per unit, correct. But a stage is one UTC day, so the binding constraint is time, not points-per-unit. Costed through the troops engine for the same point target:

RoutePoints per unitSpeedup-days for the targetPoints per speedup-day
Train raw T510027.572,000
Upgrade T4 → T56015.28129,581

The upgrade route is 1.80× better per speedup-day while being 1.67× worse per unit. So the segmentation:

Stage 2 (barbarians): the whole strategy is one number

Points are identical across a level band, so always hit the lowest level inside a band — every level above the floor is difficulty bought for nothing. The board, engine-ranked by points per action point:

Barb levelPointsPoints per APNote
202,10042band floor
253,60072band floor
264,00080band floor
405,000100ceiling of its band
4110,000200THE answer
5510,000200same points, harder fight — pointless

Level 41 pays what a level 55 pays, for the easiest fight in the top band — the single largest step on the board (100 → 200 points/AP) for one level of difficulty. Stage-2 target: 45,000 points — that is 4.5 level-41 kills, so five kills (250 AP) clears the stage with 5,000 points to spare.

Stage 2 (barbarians): the whole strategy is one number Level 41 pays what a level 55 pays, for the easiest fight in the top band — the single largest step on the board (100 → 200 points/AP) for one level of difficulty. The whole strategy is one number Barb level Points per AP 20 42 25 72 26 80 40 100 41 THE answer 200 55 200

⚠️ CHECK YOUR SEASON BEFORE YOU PLAN AROUND THIS. Level 41 barbarians do not exist in every kingdom. Through KvK3 the barbarian ceiling is level 40 (and forts cap at 10); the top band opens up from Season of Conquest onward, which extends the ceiling to barbarian 55 and fort 15 — see Your Kingdom's Season Decides Everything. If your kingdom is in KvK1–KvK3, level 40 at 100 points/AP is your real optimum and everything below about the 41 band describes content you cannot reach yet. This gate applies to every mention of level 41 in this guide, including the Stage 2 and Final Sprint rows in the stage table.

Two traps from our records: forts never (150 AP base, can't be chained, don't stack the exterminator buff — the worst point purchase on the map), and don't burn banked AP bottles here — expert ground truth: KvK/SoC barbarians and Marauders pay better for stored AP; MGE is where people habitually waste it.

Stage 3 (gathering): gold, and then a number that dwarfs gold

In-game tooltip rates, per 100 resource gathered:

ResourcePoints per 100Relative
Food1baseline
Wood1baseline
Stone22×
Gold55×
Gems (per 1)150see below

Gold is five times food or wood, so gather gold and only gold — the tile you send to matters more than the troops you send. But look at the gem row properly: 1 gem pays 150 points, and 100 gold pays 5. One gem is worth 3,000 gold in MGE points. If gem deposits are up in your kingdom, a single gem gathering run is the highest-density point action in the entire stage, and almost nobody does the arithmetic.

Timing: send gathers so they return just after the stage opens. Points bank on collection, not on dispatch — a march that lands at 23:50 UTC scores in the wrong stage.

Milestones: 10,000 → 3,000 Gold ×3 · 25,000 → 60m Universal ×3 + 30m Research ×5 · 30,000 → 75 Gems + Dazzling Starlight Sculpture ×2 + Golden Key ×1.

One honest oddity from our captures: the stone denominator reads 126, not 125, verbatim in two independent screenshots. We have not normalised it. When a capture and a tidy model disagree twice, the model is what's wrong.

Stage 4 (power): the one stage you win days in advance

2 points per 1 power gained — and identically from troop power, building power, or research power. There is no cleverness available on the rate. All of the leverage is in arrival timing.

This is the stage that rewards hoarding. Every long build and every long research you finish on any other day is points thrown away. Start your most expensive research and your highest-power building upgrades so they complete inside the Stage 4 window, and hold finished-but-uncollected work if the interface lets you. Troop training also counts here, which means a T4→T5 upgrade batch can be aimed at Stage 1 or Stage 4 — bank it for whichever you're weaker in.

Milestones: the Stage-4 milestone panel has not been captured yet — the values previously printed here were Stage 6's, moved to their own stage. Until the panel is captured, treat Stage-4 milestone contents as unknown rather than assumed.

Stage 5 (enemy elimination): the stage that pays you to fight and lets you keep the troops

Per enemy unit severely wounded or killed:

TierPoints per unit
T10.2 (tooltip reads "5 units = 1 point")
T22
T34
T410
T520

Two things almost every guide gets wrong here.

First: severely wounded counts exactly the same as killed, and healing them back costs you no MGE points. You are paid for damage dealt, not for troops permanently destroyed. That completely changes the risk calculation — a fight you win and then heal out of is nearly free points.

Second: these are not DKP values. A common DKP table pays T4=4, T5=10, dead=15 (some alliances run T4=5 — DKP weights are alliance-defined; check yours). MGE pays T4=10, T5=20. The two scoreboards reward different fights, and players who plan Stage 5 off their KvK instincts consistently mis-target.

Milestones: 10,000 → 60m Speedup ×2 · 50,000 → 60m ×4 + 4h item ×1 · 90,000 → 105 Gems + Dazzling Starlight Sculpture ×2 + Golden Key ×1.

Context switch (expert ground truth): in KvK, Stages 5 and 6 dominate the entire event — kill points accumulate so fast during real war that training, gathering and power barely register by comparison. Outside KvK there is nothing to farm, so players in the same kingdom arrange duels with each other to generate Stage-5 points. If you're not in a war and haven't coordinated a duel partner, you will score approximately zero on this stage. Arrange it in advance.

Stage 6 (Final Sprint): everything, at 0.8× — with one exception worth knowing

Final Sprint reopens all five previous stages at a uniform ×0.8 point rate (or ×1.25 on the required quantity, where scaling the points side would go fractional). We validated that law against 27 exact figures across four independently captured tables, so it holds across the board.

Except here. Level 41–55 barbarians — and Marauders, which are the same value — pay 10,000 points unscaled, at the same flat 50 AP. Everything else on the board lost 20% of its value and the top barbarian band did not.

So the level-41 optimum, already the best single action in Stage 2 at 200 points/AP, gets sharper in Stage 6 — from a 2:1 edge to 2.5:1. If you have AP left on the last day, it goes into level-41 barbarians, and it isn't close — provided your season reaches level 41 at all; through KvK3 it does not, and level 40 is the ceiling.

(Flagged honestly: we cannot yet tell whether the top band is genuinely exempt or whether the 2022-era Stage-2 value of 10,000 is stale and now higher. Either way the Stage-6 behaviour above is measured, not inferred.)

Milestones: 40,000 → 24-Hour Enhanced Attack ×1 (a +5% attack buff, not a speedup) · 160,000 → 60m Speedup ×4 + 60m Healing Speedup ×4 · 252,000 → 100 Gems + Starlight Sculpture ×2 + Golden Key ×1. One shared total; progress = floor(points ÷ threshold).

What placement is actually worth

Rank rewards go to the top 100 in each individual stage board and in the overall board — seven separate chances to place, which is the whole reason the per-stage structure matters. And the sculptures you win are of the commander you picked, so placement converts directly into progress on one specific commander.

The featured-commander sculpture ladder by final rank:

RankSculpturesRankSculptures
11807–1020
29011–1510
36016–255
45026–353
54036–452
63046–501

(This ladder is community-sourced and cross-checked, not read off a live panel — the one number on this page not from an in-game capture. Treat the shape as reliable and the exact figures as good.)

Read that curve before you spend. Rank 1 pays double rank 2, and rank 2 pays nine times rank 11. The value is violently top-heavy, which means the only two sane strategies are contest the top properly or ignore the leaderboard entirely and farm the milestone bundles. Grinding for rank 30 costs whale money and pays three sculptures.

Before you spend anything: check your kingdom's rules

This is the part that gets people zeroed. Competitive kingdoms frequently fix the top 15 places, awarding them to chosen active contributors rather than running an open race. The reason is structural: MGE commanders are always rally and garrison commanders, so the kingdom is buying war capacity, and it wants those heads in the hands of people who will use them.

If you dump a stockpile and overshoot a point cap as an unapproved non-placer, you can get rallied or zeroed for it. Check the kingdom rules and apply for a slot before you commit resources, not after.

Putting it together

The whole event, on one page:

StageCurrency to bankThe one thing
1 TrainingSpeedups or resourcesResource-bound → raw T5. Speedup-bound (whales) → T4→T5 upgrades. The standard advice is worst for the biggest spenders.
2 BarbariansAction pointsLevel 41 (Season of Conquest only — level 40 through Season 3; whether Season of Expedition carries the higher band is not yet measured). 200 pts/AP; five kills (250 AP) clears 45,000 with room to spare. Never forts.
3 GatheringMarch slots, gem tilesGold only — and one gem beats 3,000 gold.
4 PowerLong builds + researchNothing to optimise but arrival time. Land everything inside the window.
5 EliminationAP, heals, troopsSeverely wounded pays like killed and heals are free. In KvK this stage is the event; outside KvK, arrange duels.
6 Final SprintWhatever's leftEverything at 0.8× — except level 41–55 barbarians, unscaled (if your season has them). Leftover AP goes here.

The single strategic idea: six stages, six boards, and you do not have to win the event. Pick the two or three stages your account is actually rich in, hoard for those, and let the rest clear milestones. A player who dumps everything into one stage they can win beats a player who spreads evenly across six they can't.

And pick your commander late. The choice locks only at the end of the final stage, so you get five days of information — where you're placing, what's reachable — before committing the sculptures to a name.

One special case: a kingdom's very first MGE runs the first five stages only, over five days. No Final Sprint. If you're in a new kingdom, there is no catch-up day and Stage 5 is the last word.

Honest edges of this page

Rank-versus-points bands are not captured for any stage, so we can tell you what placement pays but not what it costs — "what does top 15 take in my kingdom" is the one MGE question we cannot answer yet, and it is genuinely kingdom-specific. Glance at your own leaderboard at the next event and you will have a better answer for your kingdom than any guide can give you.

Want this run against your actual account? The stage-by-stage arithmetic above is generic by necessity — it doesn't know your T4 stockpile, your speedup bank, your AP balance, or which commanders in this cycle's pool you've already invested in. That last one decides whether a top-15 push is worth real money or a waste of it, because sculptures you can't use are just decoration. With Sage of War, you tell it about your account; screenshot reading is live on paid plans. It tells you which two stages to contest, what your realistic placement is, and whether this cycle is the one to spend on — or the one to hoard through.
